St. John Britto Primary School, Vasona
History (Brief History and Milestones of the School)
In 1913–1914, priests and sisters would travel from Talasari to visit the village of Vasona, which at the time was a dense forested area where residents faced severe drinking water challenges. The people relied on the Daman Ganga River for their water supply. In 1914, a priest, with the help of the local community, dug a well in the field of the late Sonyabhai Tumbda, providing much-needed relief to the villagers.
Fr. Jose Albuquerque would travel from Silvassa to Kudacha, Dapada, Zatipada, and then to villages like Vasona Pardhipada, Chichpada, and Zatipada. Responding to the community’s request, he established a school in Vasona in 1939. However, the Portuguese authorities at the time prohibited Adivasi children from attending school and created significant obstacles for Fr. Albuquerque, eventually forcing him to close the school.
In 1942, Fr. Albuquerque reopened the school in the house of the late Mahu Harji Tumbda. A few months later, it was shifted to the house of Ratan Lahnu Tumbda. The school quickly grew, attracting 60 to 70 children from nearby villages such as Karad, Pati, Chichpada, Dungaripada, and Vasona.
In 1947, under the leadership of Fr. Cabral, a mud structure was constructed for the school. Later, Fr. Sequeira and Bro. Lourance worked with the community to improve the school’s infrastructure. They began offering classes from kindergarten to 3rd standard. After completing the 3rd standard, students would continue their education at Isu Ruday High School in Dapada.
