FATIMA MATA SCHOOL, VELUGAM
History (Brief History and Milestones of the School)
Fatima Mata School, Velugam, is a Marathi Medium Secondary School managed by the Gyanmata Educational Society. It was established in 1968 by Fr. Joseph Menezes at the request of the local people. Initially, the school operated in the home of Chaiti Sutar Kadu and Raina Sutar Kadu.
After a year, Fr. Menezes constructed a small room of sticks and mud, with a cow dung floor, attached to the house, where classes were conducted. Mr. Navsya Balya Malkari, a Catholic, was the school’s first teacher, joined later by Dhanya Bhendya Gavit in September 1968.
The Mission of Velugam was initially overseen by the priests from Khanvel and later by those from Karachgam. In 1974, a concrete room was built on the property of Mr. Navsya Devu Hadal, and for nearly 15 years, the school operated near his house.
In 1984, Fr. Joseph Menezes and Fr. Franklyn purchased land and built a small house. Some classrooms were moved to this new location while others continued in the earlier space. Fr. Emile Almeida, with the assistance of Rita Webber, a German benefactor, and Fr. Joseph Rodriguez, constructed the present school and hostel.
Recognized by the Directorate of Education, Silvassa, and affiliated with the Maharashtra State Board of Education, the school prepares students for the S.S.C. Examination, enabling them to lead dignified lives.
A major milestone in the school’s history was the inauguration of the new school building on 25th September 2021. This state-of-the-art structure is dedicated to the welfare of tribal children and represents a significant advancement in the school’s facilities.
